A Tortoise At My Front Door
(1 post)-
Jules: A strange thing happened recently. When I opened the front door of my house this morning, to my surprise, I found a little tortoise on the floor. I don't leave anywhere close to a natural habitat for animals. In fact I live in a big community of townhouses. Mr OWO: So what did you do? Jules: I decided to release it into a huge lake at a park where I noticed earlier had a couple of tortoises there. But at the same time, I was quite perplexed by the event and wondered at the significance of the unusual appearance of the animal. On top of that, it was very odd for the tortoise to be at my front door step instead of being say at some corner of my car porch. Anyway, I couldn't find anything out more other than being told that it was a sign of good luck. The kids were pretty excited. Mr OWO: Didn't the kids make a fuss when you said you were going to release it into more natural surroundings and pested you to keep the animal as a family pet? Jules: No, not even the slightest suggestion. Perhaps it is because I had previously brought them to an outing before where the family released some fishes and tortoises into a river. So they know where the animals belong. But something interesting happened when we released Alfie, that is what we called him (or her). After letting him go in the lake, he disappeared for about a minute and then reappeared clinging to the lake edge with his head sticking out his shell and just looking at us. My son, Neal told me that Alfie may not like her new home and asked me to bring it back up. I look at Alfie for a little while and said to him that if he didn't like it here, I was going to carry him out. Just as I was going to move my arms to pick him up, the tortoise plunged back into the murky water and that was the last we saw of him. Mr OWO: Did it occur to you that Alfie was actually saying goodbye and thanking you for having taken the trouble to let him go free? Jules: Come to think of it, the same thing happened with the fishes and tortoises which my kids and I had released some time ago. All of them swam back to us like they were showing their gesture of appreciation. Mr OWO: It might just be true that animals have consciousness which we are ignorant of. So be kind to all beings, not just humans.Posted 1 year ago #
