Kid Says She Wants To Be A Free Thinker
(2 posts)-
Jules: Nell is 12 and says she wants to be a free thinker now. Last year she said that she wanted to be a Christian. Mr OWO: What kind of spiritual teachings do you give your kids anyway? Jules: I send them for Dharma Classes immediately followed by Christian Sunday School. I just hope they don't get a spiritual burnout from spending half their Sundays this way! Mr OWO: Interesting arrangement you have there. How did you end up doing it that way? Jules: I felt the kids should not have to decide which spiritual path they take when they are so young. They can make up their mind later on when wisdom sets in. There is wisdom in every religion. The problem begins when we are so fixated with one view that we can't or won't want to understand the religion of others. Mr OWO: Spirituality is just too big for one religion. It is like asking an ant to describe an elephant. Yes it is our responsibility as parents to expose our children to as many religions and spiritual teachings as possible, to get them to ask as many questions as possible so that their lives be properly guided in wisdom and understanding instead of blindly following or worst still, their every action is done out of fear. If an action was done out of fear, it is not a genuine action. It does not reflect a person that has truly been transformed into a good human being. So what was your response to your daughter? Jules: I told her that she can be anything she wants. She can be a free thinker, a Christian, a Buddhist. Just be a good one. One who cares for all human beings regardless of race or religion. I told her that a religion is just a label. What is important are her actions.Posted 1 year ago #

Hi there Jules,
I am curious. How come you did not include being a Hindu? You are not being very impartial there.
